Expert Commentary
While the standard is the same, the application varies significantly between Foam Cores and Honeycomb Cores. For Honeycomb, the orientation (L-direction vs. W-direction) changes the shear modulus by over 50%. MTO’s software includes a Material Direction field in the metadata to ensure that results are categorized correctly for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) validation. From a hardware perspective, the Core Shear modulus calculation requires a very high-resolution extensometer (often a Clip-on or Digital Image Correlation) to measure the minute displacement of the steel plates relative to each other. We emphasize the use of our 0.1 micrometer resolution encoders for these specific aerospace-grade cores.
