Expert Commentary
High-Elongation Dynamics: Rubber testing under ASTM D412 often exceeds 500% strain. Standard clip-on extensometers are physically incapable of this travel and are too heavy for delicate rubber strips. A Long-Travel Extensometer or TestVE is required. The non-contacting nature of the TestVE is particularly valuable here because it eliminates the stress riser caused by knife edges, which often triggers premature failure in elastomers.
